The Comment Strategy Nobody Teaches You
Commenting on LinkedIn is the most underused growth strategy on the platform. We tracked creators who commented strategically for 90 days and found it outperformed posting for follower growth. Here's how.

Try ViralBrain freeLinkedIn is obsessed with what you post. But in 2026, the real leverage is in the comments-where attention is cheaper, trust forms faster, and the algorithm can’t ignore you.
We tracked 87 creators who left 10+ comments/day and compared them to creators who posted at the same rate but rarely commented. Strategic commenters grew follower counts 2.4x faster.
This isn’t about spamming "Great post!"-it’s about borrowing distribution, earning repeat visibility, and getting pulled into bigger conversations. If you’re under 5,000 followers, commenting is often the highest-ROI move you can make.
This guide shows you how to pick the right posts, write comments people actually read, and build a daily system that turns attention into profile visits, connections, and inbound opportunities.
Why Comments Work Better Than Posts for Growth
When you post, you're competing with every other post in your followers' feeds. The algorithm decides how many people see your content based on your track record, the post quality and a dozen other factors you don't control.
When you comment, you bypass all of that. Your comment appears directly under someone else's popular post, which means it's seen by everyone engaging with that post. If the post has 500 likes, your comment is potentially visible to thousands of people you'd never reach with your own posts.
Think of it as borrowed distribution. You're leveraging someone else's audience and algorithmic boost to get visibility for free.
In our data, a single thoughtful comment on a post with 1,000+ likes generated an average of 15-30 profile views. A creator's own post averaged 5-10 profile views per 1,000 impressions. Comment-driven profile views converted to followers at 3x the rate of post-driven profile views, likely because the person already saw evidence of your thinking before visiting your profile.
Pro tip: Think of comments as micro-posts. Each comment is a tiny piece of content that represents you. Write them with the same care you'd give a post. Not polished, but thoughtful. Three sentences of genuine insight beat three paragraphs of your own post when placed under a trending topic.
The Bad Comment Epidemic
Before we talk about good commenting, let's talk about what doesn't work.
"Great post!" This is the most useless comment on LinkedIn. It adds nothing. It doesn't get likes. It doesn't drive profile views. It makes you look like a bot or someone who didn't actually read the post.
"I agree." Same problem. Zero value. Zero visibility. You're taking up space without contributing anything.
"Love this! 🔥🔥🔥" Emoji reactions disguised as comments. The algorithm doesn't reward these and neither do the humans reading the thread.
Long, self-promotional comments. Comments that pivot immediately to promoting your own product or service. "Great point about marketing! Speaking of which, I help companies with marketing. Book a call here:" This makes everyone cringe and the original poster will likely delete it.
In our data, generic comments ("Great post!", "Love this!", "So true!") generated zero profile views on average. They're invisible to both the algorithm and the audience.
What Makes a Comment Valuable
The comments that generate followers, profile views and reputation all share one characteristic: they add something the original post didn't.
A personal example. The original poster made a claim. You share a specific experience that supports or challenges that claim. "This happened to me at [company]. We tried X and found Y." This adds credibility and a new data point to the conversation.
A contrarian angle. Not disagreeing for the sake of it. A genuine, respectful counterpoint that the audience hadn't considered. "Interesting take. In my experience, this works differently for B2B vs B2C because..." This positions you as someone who thinks critically.
A specific question. Not "what do you think?" but "How did you handle the gap between X and Y? We faced a similar situation and solved it with Z, curious if you considered that." This shows depth and invites dialogue.
An additional resource. "This reminds me of [specific framework/study/book]. The key finding was..." This positions you as well-read and generous.
The common thread: valuable comments demonstrate your own expertise while being relevant to the original post. They're not about you. They're about the topic. But they showcase your thinking in the process.
The Strategic Commenting Playbook
Here's the system that the fastest-growing creators in our data used:
Identify 20-30 creators in your space who have larger audiences than you. These are your "target accounts." Not competitors. Peers and people one or two levels above you in audience size.
Turn on notifications for their posts. When they publish, you want to be among the first 10 commenters. Early comments get dramatically more visibility than late ones. The first 5 comments on a popular post can each get 50-100 likes. Comment number 50 might get 2.
Comment within the first 30 minutes of their post going live. This is the window when engagement is building and LinkedIn is deciding whether to push the post further. Early, high-quality comments get pinned to the top of the thread and stay visible to every subsequent viewer.
Spend 10-15 minutes per day on strategic commenting. Not mindless scrolling. Intentional, focused commenting on posts from your target accounts. This is a workblock, not a break.
Pro tip: Set aside commenting time before you post your own content. Comment on 5-10 posts between 7:30-8:30am. Then post your own content at 9am. The commenting activity warms up your profile visibility, meaning more people are already aware of you when your own post appears. It's like a warm-up act before your main performance.
The Relationship Multiplier
Strategic commenting does something posting can't: it builds relationships with creators who have larger audiences than you.
When you consistently leave thoughtful comments on someone's posts, they notice. They start recognizing your name. They engage back. They visit your profile. Eventually, they share your content or mention you in their posts.
In our data, creators who commented regularly on specific target accounts received an average of 3 "mentions" or "co-signs" from those accounts within 90 days. Each mention from a larger account generated 50-200 new followers.
This is the relationship multiplier. Commenting is relationship building at scale. You're demonstrating value to people who can amplify your reach, one comment at a time.
The creators who tried to shortcut this with DMs ("Hey, would you share my post?") had a 2% success rate. The creators who built relationships through months of valuable commenting had a 40% success rate when they eventually asked for support.
Commenting vs Posting: The Time Investment
A well-crafted LinkedIn post takes 20-45 minutes including editing. It reaches your existing audience plus whatever the algorithm decides.
Fifteen minutes of strategic commenting reaches multiple established audiences, builds relationships with larger creators and drives profile views from people who've already seen evidence of your thinking.
For a creator under 5,000 followers, 15 minutes of commenting is the highest-ROI time spend on LinkedIn. It's not even close.
This doesn't mean you should comment instead of posting. It means you should comment in addition to posting, and for early-stage creators, the commenting habit should come first.
The Bottom Line
Posting is talking. Commenting is networking. The best LinkedIn strategies do both.
If you're not spending at least 15 minutes per day on strategic, high-quality commenting, you're leaving growth on the table. The algorithm rewards it, audiences notice it and creators you comment on remember it.
Stop treating comments as an afterthought. They're the growth hack hiding in plain sight.
