The most dangerous thing in a high-growth company is a "ghost process."
A ghost process is a rule or a way of doing things that everyone follows, but nobody can remember why it was created in the first place.
Usually, it started for a very good reason. A mistake happened in 2021, so a new approval layer was added. A client got angry in 2022, so a new weekly report was mandated. At the time, these were rational responses to specific pain points.
But as the company scales, the pain points disappear while the processes remain. They calcify. They become part of the "culture."
And this is how you end up with a 500-person company that moves with the speed of a 5,000-person bureaucracy.
I recently sat down with a founder who was frustrated that his engineering team had slowed down. We did a "process audit" and found that the average engineer was spending 12 hours a week on documentation that literally no one was reading.
When we asked why they did it, the answer was always the same: "That's just how we do things here."
