Mikelle Pellum positions herself as a high-level bridge between traditional craftsmanship and the future of apparel technology, transforming fashion creatives into digital artisans. Her content strategy centers on the practical utility of 3D design tools like CLO3D, where she skillfully navigates the tension between generative AI and technical data, arguing that while AI creates pictures, 3D creates production-ready reality. She is notable for her pragmatic, manufacturer-first philosophy, often debunking the "more is better" myth in tech packs to advocate for visual clarity and construction integrity. By intersecting technical education with entrepreneurial transparency, Mikelle provides a grounded roadmap for designers who want to adopt modern tech without losing the tactile, problem-solving soul of the maker movement.

I saw a post on LinkedIn recently about whether the industry should have a universal tech pack standard. My honest take: it's never going to happen. Every factory has its own workflow, every produc…

Something Rocío Evenett ✂️🧵🇺🇸 said in our CAD Chats last week is still sitting with me. She was talking about why tech packs get confusing for manufacturers, especially here in the US where most…

Do fashion designers really need 3D? With all the AI tools out there right now, it's a fair question. AI can be helpful for design development: generating concepts, exploring directions, even creati…
When I asked Rocío Evenett ✂️🧵🇺🇸 in our recent CAD Chats episode what are the most common mistakes that designers are making with their tech packs, I was expecting an answer about sketches, measure…

Is it just me, or are we overcomplicating the "AI vs. Designer" debate?
I’ve been seeing a lot of talk lately about how AI is going to replace the need for technical skills in fashion. The idea is that if you can prompt a beautiful image, you don't need to understand the "how" behind the garment.
But here’s the thing: a prompt isn't a pattern.
AI is incredible for mood boards and early concepting. It can help you visualize a vibe in seconds. But when it comes time to actually make the thing—to figure out the seam allowance, the fabric drape, and the grade rules—AI leaves you hanging.
That’s where the DATA comes in.
Whether you’re using 3D tools like CLO or drafting by hand, you still need that foundational knowledge of construction. You can't automate the craft, and you certainly can't manufacture a JPEG.
We need to stop looking at these tools as a replacement for skill and start seeing them as an extension of our workflow. Use AI to dream, but use your technical skills to build.
I’m curious—are you using AI to supplement your design process, or are you finding it creates more confusion when it’s time to sample?
