Valerie Ehrlich positions herself as a sophisticated bridge between high-level AI ethics and the practical operational needs of the nonprofit sector. Her content strategy centers on moving mission-driven organizations beyond reactive, individual experimentation toward a "collaborative, strategic use" of AI that respects human dignity and institutional accountability. She is notable for her ability to translate 20 years of evaluation and learning expertise into a framework for AI as a "learning steward," emphasizing that the technology should augment human synthesis rather than replace it. This creates a compelling intersection of organizational development and technical literacy, where she advocates for "institutional courage" to ensure AI serves as a tool for democratic agency and systemic impact rather than a mere efficiency gain.

I’ve been thinking a lot about the difference between "using AI" and "partnering with AI" in our daily workflows.
Most of the advice out there focuses on the output. How to get a better email, a better report, or a better piece of code. But for those of us in the learning and strategy space, the output is often less important than the process of getting there.
What if we treated the AI as a "thinking partner" rather than a "task runner"?
Lately, I’ve been using a simple practice: before I ask an AI to do anything, I spend three minutes "setting the stage." I describe the emotional context of the project, the tensions in the room, and the specific human needs we are trying to meet.
The results?
The insights are deeper. The tone is more aligned. And most importantly, I feel more connected to the work, not less.
It’s a small shift, but it changes the energy of the collaboration. It moves us from a reactive posture to an intentional one.
How are you finding ways to keep the "human" in the loop as you experiment with these tools? I’d love to hear your reflections!
