I used to think being the 'fastest' person in the room was a personality trait. It wasn't. It was a defense mechanism.
In most corporate roles, if you aren't fast, you're invisible. So I spent a decade perfecting the art of the 'quick turnaround.' I'd pull the data, clean the mess, and ship the dashboard before the VP finished their coffee.
I thought I was winning. I wasn't. I was just becoming a very expensive human API.
Then I started building agents. Not just 'using AI'—actually building workflows that do the parts of my job I used to pride myself on.
The first time an agent caught a data discrepancy that I would have missed? That's when the ego died. And that's when the career actually started.
Because once you stop being the 'data puller,' you have to become the 'decision maker.' And that is a much scarier, much more lucrative place to be.
