The Signals the Algorithm Actually Measures
LinkedIn's algorithm doesn't have an "AI detector" running behind the scenes. What it has is something more effective: a set of quality signals that AI-generated content consistently fails.
Think of it like a lie detector test. The machine doesn't detect lies directly. It detects the physiological responses that liars tend to produce. The algorithm works the same way. It doesn't detect AI. It detects the engagement patterns that AI content tends to create.

In our data, the posts with the highest share rates are almost always ones with a strong point of view, a surprising data point or a personal story that resonates. These are the qualities that AI struggles most to produce because they require lived experience, not pattern matching.
Signal 4: Repeat pattern flagging. This is the one LinkedIn won't confirm, but the evidence is growing. If your last 20 posts all follow the same structure (opening hook of similar length, three body paragraphs of similar length, clean conclusion with a question), the algorithm appears to gradually reduce your distribution.

Average engagement rate of probable AI posts: 0.31%. Compare that to the dataset overall average of 0.67%. AI posts perform at roughly half the rate of the general population, which includes a mix of AI and human content. Against posts with strong human markers, the gap is even wider.
Comment-to-like ratio on AI posts: 0.06. Meaning for every 100 likes, AI posts get about 6 comments. The dataset average is 0.18 (18 comments per 100 likes). Human-marked posts hit

Average comment length on AI posts: 4.2 words. On human-written posts with high engagement: 18.7 words. The comments tell you everything. Short, generic comments mean the content inspired nothing. The difference is the raw material. AI is a processing tool, not an origination tool.
Step 2: Use AI for structure, not voice. Let AI help you organize your thoughts. "I have these three observations about cold outreach. What's the most logical order and where should I add a personal example?" That's a good use of AI. "Write me a post about cold outreach" is not. You're providing the substance. Step 4: Add imperfections intentionally. Real writing has texture. It has incomplete thoughts, unusual word choices, parenthetical asides that go slightly off topic. AI writing is frictionless. Too frictionless. After rewriting in your voice, consider leaving in a few rough edges. Not errors, but personality. A casual aside. A half-formed thought you acknowledge as half-formed. Something that makes a reader think "a machine wouldn't write that."

Varying your paragraph length is one of the simplest authenticity signals. A one-sentence paragraph after a long block creates emphasis. AI doesn't think about emphasis. It thinks about completeness.
Specific, ungooglable details. "My client's conversion rate dropped 23% in three weeks" is something only you know. "Conversion rates can fluctuate significantly" is something AI knows. The more ungoogleable details you include, the more your content reads as firsthand experience. These are the details AI cannot produce because they don't exist in training data. They exist in your experience.
Emotional inconsistency. A real person writing about a professional topic will sometimes be enthusiastic, sometimes frustrated, sometimes uncertain, sometimes amused. AI maintains a steady, pleasant, slightly positive tone throughout. These are fields where the audience needs to believe the author has real expertise and firsthand experience. A financial advisor posting AI-generated market commentary destroys their credibility faster than posting nothing at all. The audience in these sectors is sophisticated enough to spot generic analysis, and they punish it by scrolling past.
Technical industries are moderately affected. In software engineering (2.57% engagement rate, the highest in our data), the audience values specificity above all else. AI can produce technically accurate content about programming concepts, but it can't describe the specific bug you spent three hours debugging last Tuesday or the architectural decision that seemed smart in January and turned into a disaster by March. Technical audiences engage with war stories, not textbook explanations.
Motivational and personal development content is least affected. AI-generated inspirational content actually performs reasonably well (0.39% engagement rate in our data, which is below average but not terrible). The bar for this content type is already low. "Believe in yourself and work hard" doesn't require credentials. It doesn't require personal experience. It's universal enough that AI can produce something passable. This is also why motivational content has the highest average likes (1,222) but one of the lowest engagement rates. The content is pleasant but not engaging enough to drive comments.
The practical takeaway: the more your industry depends on demonstrated expertise and trust, the more damage AI content does to your profile. And conversely, if you're in one of those industries and you write genuinely human content, the competitive advantage is enormous because most of your competitors are posting AI slop.
Pro tip: Before using AI for any LinkedIn post, ask yourself: "Does my audience need to trust that I personally know this?" If yes (financial advice, medical insights, technical recommendations), write it yourself or at minimum rewrite the AI output so thoroughly that your specific experience is woven through every paragraph. If no (general inspiration, news commentary), AI assistance carries less risk, but you'll still perform better with a human touch.

Pro tip: Think of AI flooding the feed as an opportunity, not a threat. When 60% of posts sound identical, even a moderately distinctive voice stands out like a flare in the dark. You don't need to be a brilliant writer. You need to be recognizably human. That bar is getting lower every day as AI raises the floor of mediocrity.
