I was recently asked in a job application what I felt were my barriers to getting ahead in the film/TV industry. I'm fairly sure they were looking for something structural, but my response was an inability to sell myself. I'm a creative person with a lot to contribute to the industry, but I've always been bad at the kind of self-promotion hustle that you often need to get ahead.
Part of it is self-doubt, some of it is a false sense of 'politeness'. It feels unnatural to shout about my own achievements when I'd rather just be doing the work.
So, genuine question, how does someone like me, who is uncomfortable with self-promotion, get over it and get ahead?
